Wheeler Society of Women Engineers

Promoting Dignity, Respect, and Justice For All

WHY SWE?

Women make up half of the total U.S. college-educated workforce, but only 28% of the science and engineering workforce.

In the US, there is 1 female engineer to every 10 male engineers.

If you hear "CEO," or "mechanic," you think of a man in that position. But, if you hear "teacher," or "nurse," you think of a woman. We grow up thinking those are patterns we too have to follow.

SWE aims to change all of this. We aim to normalize girls in engineering and show to others that it is an option they can choose and enjoy.

WHAT IS ENGINEERING?

Engineering is solving problems.

Whether it's something to make a better espresso or something to remove plastic from the oceans, that's engineering in application.

WHAT DO WE DO?

We've all worked on different things in class - water rockets, heavy-duty wooden carts, wooden bridges, mousetrap-powered cars and more!

Our first project as a club used woodworking to solve a problem for Ultimate Karate and Fitness. We worked on making the perfect athletic box.

This had a surprising amount of work put into it. We made several miniature prototypes from popsicle sticks, and once we had a final design, we were ready to order our supplies and assemble once school started up again.
